UCGE Meeting Minutes – February 1, 2008

Present: Barry Trimmer (chair), Arthur Donohue-Rolfe, Larry Feig, Shafik Islam, Vincent Manno, Peter Walker, Dean Linda Abriola (School of Engineering)
Meeting convened 12:00 PM
1) Discussion with Dean Abriola – Dean Abriola discussed ongoing developments in the School of Engineering as they relate to the advancement of research and graduate programs. Dean Abriola addressed issues of strategic directions, faculty recruiting, faculty workload including assessment and reward systems, graduate program financial models, and encouragement of cross-disciplinary scholarship. The discussion was motivated by the UCGE’s document, “Structuring Ph.D. Programs at Tufts”, which was presented at the December 2007 Provost Council meeting. The council appreciated Dean Abriola taking the time to discuss these issues in substantive detail and this experience motivated the decision to meet with other Tufts school deans to discuss similar issues over the course of the spring term. Barry Trimmer and Vin Manno will coordinate the details of these future meetings
2) There was a brief discussion of future focal topics for the council and mechanisms for interacting with the Research and Graduate Programs Council. This discussion will be continued at the next meeting, currently scheduled for March 25.
