UCGE Meeting Minutes – November 14, 2007

Present: Barry Trimmer (chair), Arthur Donohue-Rolfe, Shafik Islam, Peter Uvin, Vin Manno
1) Minutes from September meeting were read by Vin and approved.
2) Changes in Operational Changes document
Barry had written up an additional section on academic environment for doctoral students. This section was reviewed, edited and approved by the committee. Barry will incorporate the editorial changes and send them to Vin who will be responsible for their inclusion into the web site.
3) Changes to the Structuring Doctoral Programs at Tufts document
Using the current reporting scheme of the University, we discussed whether this was the optimum scheme to enhance and empower graduate education. The general consensus was that an assumption that we make is that university financial and administrative support must accompany the changes we are outlining in this document. We should underscore this point in our document. A statement regarding financial and administrative support of these structural doctoral program changes will be added to the introductiory paragraph by Barry.
We reviewed and edited the entire document.
Barry will put together the next draft which will be circulated by email to all UCGE members for final editing. The document will then be presented to the Provost Council on December 19. This meeting will start at 9AM and UCGE members will be informed more fully regarding when our document will be discussed.
